Headaches - Holistic and Alternative Medicine SolutionsMuscle Tension Headaches (also known as "stress headaches") make up 90% of all headaches.Headache treatment depends on what caused it. A headache arising from visual problems can often be cured by eyeglasses. An infection headache of the sinuses or ears is relieved when the infection subsides. But the most common headaches are usually treated with painkillers. The hundreds of millions of dollars spent each year on everything from aspirin and ibuprofen to prescription drugs may provide blessed relief, but please remember -- the pain may be gone but the cuase of the headche is not corrected. That's why we may see millions of people swallowing pills for years, possibly suffering from the side effects on long-term medication -- and not getting any better, only temporarily feeling better. Today, millions of headache sufferers are turning to natural, frugless approaches to health. Holistic and alternative medicine therapies can help with headaches. The links below will take you to that therapy page, where you can view our practitioners directory for that therapy, and use our "instant info" to email a question to the relevant practitioners. Chiropractic for Headaches Researches have often notes the relationship between the spine and many types of headaches. For example, one study of 6000 long-term (2-25 years) headache sufferers revealed that nect injury (whiplash, falls) was the most important factor in the cause of the headache and should be suspected in every nonspecific case of headache. For over one hundred years, doctors of chiropractic have observed an intimiate relationship between the spine and headaches. Many migraine patients have claimed relief under chiropractic care. In other words, if you suffer from headaches often, make sure your spine is healthy. See your chiropractor. Studies on Acupuncture and Headaches Since the early seventies, studies have suggested that acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines and headaches. In a case study, published in the June 2003 Issue of Medical Acupuncture, doctors found that acupuncture resulted in the resolution or reduction in the frequency and severity of cluster headaches, and a decrease or discontinuation of medications. It was concluded that Acupuncture can be used to provide sustained relief from cluster headaches and to stimulate adrenal cortisol to aid in discontinuing corticosteroids. A clinical observation, published in a 2002 edition of the Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine, of 50 patient presenting with various types of headaches were treated with scalp acupuncture. The results of this study showed that 98% of patients treated with scalp acupuncture experienced no headaches or only occasional, mild headaches in the six months following care. In a study published in the November 1999 issue of Cephalalgia, scientists evaluated the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of migraines and recurrent headaches by systematically reviewing 22 randomized controlled trials. A total of 1,042 patients were examined. It was found that headache and migraine sufferers experienced significantly more relief from acupuncture than patients who were administered "sham" acupuncture. |
